1. Abraj Al Bait, Saudi Arabia ($15 billion)
Looking at that picture alone should give you a clue why the Abraj Al Bait is the world’s most expensive building. Even the 88.2 acres Masjid al-Haram, which is the world’s largest mosque, seems so small next to its gigantic construction.
The whole complex was built in a few stages. Finished in 2012, the construction cost is nothing near any building in the world. It was around $15 billion. I’m not sure if its purpose is to cater pilgrims or simply showing off the Arabian wealth.
This building has 120 floors and 601-meter height. As you can see from the picture, the tallest tower has the world’s largest clock face on it. Designed by Dar Al-Handasah, it is currently owned by Saudi Arabian Government.
The main tower is the Fairmont Makkah Clock Royal Tower Hotel. It features 9 state-of-the-art dining venues. And attention to all shopaholics out there, you may need a shopping map here. Because within the Abraj Al Bait area, there are over 4,000 shops you can go to.
