The most expensive guitar ever sold is David Gilmour’s Black Strat, which fetched $14.55 million at Christie’s in New York on March 12, 2026. It more than doubled the previous record and was one of three guitars from a single week that cracked the old top spot. This list ranks the ten highest verified public auction prices for individual guitars, including the buyer’s premium, as of October 2026.

1. David Gilmour’s Black Strat: $14,550,000
Gilmour bought a sunburst 1969 Fender Stratocaster at Manny’s Music in New York in 1970, after Pink Floyd’s rented van full of gear was stolen in New Orleans. The shop had painted it black. He kept it for half a century, rebuilding and swapping parts until little but the body was original, and played it on “Money”, “Comfortably Numb” and “Shine On You Crazy Diamond”. For about a decade it hung on loan at a Hard Rock Cafe, where it suffered more damage than it ever did on tour.
Jim Irsay paid $3.975 million for it at a Christie’s charity sale in 2019. In March 2026 the same house sold it from his collection to an online bidder after a 21-minute bidding fight, against a pre-sale estimate of $2 to $4 million. Our number is the final price including Christie’s premium, as reported across the trade press and auction coverage.
2. Jerry Garcia’s Tiger: $11,560,000
Doug Irwin spent about six years building this Grateful Dead guitar, delivering it in 1979. It weighs roughly 14 pounds and is made of laminated woods with solid brass hardware and an inlaid tiger on the preamp cover. Garcia played it as his main touring guitar until 1989, and it was the last guitar he used on stage, at Soldier Field in July 1995.
Irsay bought it in 2002 for $957,500. On March 12, 2026 it hammered at $9.5 million, or $11.56 million with fees, roughly twelve times what he paid. The figure rests on the Christie’s result including premium.
3. Kurt Cobain’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” Mustang: $6,907,000
Cobain was left-handed, and this Lake Placid Blue 1969 Fender Mustang is the one from the 1991 video. He damaged it, and the neck joint was later repaired. It then went on tour with Nirvana through the Nevermind and In Utero years.
Irsay paid $4.55 million for it at Julien’s in 2022. The 2026 Christie’s price is a record for any Cobain guitar and the third highest guitar price ever recorded. We use the all-in price including premium.
4. Kurt Cobain’s MTV Unplugged Martin D-18E: $6,010,000
This 1959 acoustic held the guitar record for almost six years. Cobain played it at the November 1993 MTV Unplugged taping, in the set that ended with “Where Did You Sleep Last Night”. It passed through his family before Julien’s sold it in June 2020. The buyer, the founder of an Australian microphone company, later donated it to a London music college.
The price is the Julien’s result including buyer’s premium. It is the oldest sale in the top five and the only one that was not part of a collection auction.
5. Eric Clapton’s 1939 Martin 000-42: $4,101,000
Clapton played this small-bodied Martin on his 1992 MTV Unplugged set, the album that sold more than 26 million copies and won three Grammys. In 2004 he sold it to raise money for the Crossroads Centre, his addiction treatment facility in Antigua, and it fetched $791,500. When Christie’s sold it from the Irsay collection in March 2026 it brought $4.1 million, more than five times as much.
That jump is the best argument on the list that a famous guitar can outperform a lot of stocks. We use the 2026 Christie’s result with premium.
6. Eddie Van Halen’s “Hot for Teacher” Kramer: $3,932,000
Van Halen played this red, white and black striped Kramer through 1983 and 1984 and in the “Hot for Teacher” video. Around 1990 he gave it to his retiring drum tech, and it stayed out of sight until Sotheby’s sold it in April 2023. It remains the top Van Halen guitar on this list.
Our figure is the Sotheby’s price including fees.
7. Eric Clapton’s “The Fool” Gibson SG: $3,003,000
The 1964 SG was painted with psychedelic figures by The Fool, a Dutch design collective, and Clapton used it with Cream on “Sunshine of Your Love” and “Strange Brew”. Todd Rundgren owned it for years afterward. Irsay bought it at Julien’s in November 2023 for $1.27 million, and Christie’s sold it in March 2026 for just over $3 million, a record for any Gibson at auction.
The price is the Christie’s total with premium.
8. John Lennon’s Framus Hootenanny 12-string: $2,857,500
Lennon played this German 12-string on the Help! sessions and on Rubber Soul tracks, then gave it away in late 1965 to Gordon Waller of Peter and Gordon. It later went to Waller’s manager and ended up in an attic for decades, unplayed. Julien’s sold it on May 29, 2024, setting a record for a Beatles guitar.
The number is Julien’s published realized price with premium.
9. Eddie Van Halen’s 1982 Kramer: $2,734,000
Van Halen helped build this Kramer, signed it and gave it to his guitar tech Rudy Leiren. Mick Mars of Motley Crue played it for a while afterward. Sotheby’s ran the sale as an online auction for a month and it closed in October 2025 at $2.734 million.
We took the Sotheby’s closing price with fees.
10. John Lennon’s Gibson J-160E: $2,410,000
This Gibson was stolen from Lennon in the late 1960s and resurfaced decades later. It sold at Julien’s in November 2015 for $2.41 million. The same sale included Ringo Starr’s 1964 Ed Sullivan Show drumhead at $5.05 million.
The ranking uses the realized price with premium. A Gibson SG used by George Harrison, sold in the Irsay auction at $2.27 million, sits just below.
One more sale sits near the bottom of this range but stays unranked here: a Strat signed by Bryan Adams and others for tsunami relief was reportedly auctioned in Qatar in 2005 for about $2.7 million. We could only confirm that from a single source, so we leave it off the list.
Records set in 2025 and 2026
- October 2025: Eddie Van Halen’s 1982 Kramer sold for $2.734 million at Sotheby’s, making it one of the ten richest guitar sales on record.
- March 2026: The Jim Irsay Collection sale at Christie’s totaled about $94.5 million across four days, and every lot sold. Auction coverage reports 28 records, although at least one outlet counted 23.
- March 12, 2026: The Black Strat, Tiger and Cobain’s Mustang all passed the previous $6.01 million record in the same week. Three of the four most expensive guitar sales ever came from that one room.
- March 2026: Records for a Gibson (The Fool, $3.003 million), for a Clapton guitar (the Martin, $4.101 million) and for any Cobain guitar (the Mustang, $6.907 million).
What drives these prices
- One famous recording beats a decade of use. Cobain’s Unplugged Martin and Clapton’s Martin both made the list because of a single television performance that millions saw.
- Condition matters less than story. The Black Strat is a heavily rebuilt guitar with few original parts, and it still outsold every pristine vintage Les Paul.
- A single great collection pushes prices up. Irsay bought each of the 2026 top guitars at earlier auctions, so bidders in March were competing against a documented, trusted provenance.
- Buyers arrive from outside music. Online bidders, museums and collectors of cultural artifacts now bid next to guitarists. The Black Strat’s 21-minute fight is the pattern.
- Prices ratchet. Several guitars here have sold twice. Clapton’s Martin went from $791,500 in 2004 to $4.1 million in 2026.

Kurt Cobain’s 1959 Martin D-18E from MTV Unplugged, sold for $6.01 million at Julien’s in June 2020. It held the record for nearly six years.
What is the most expensive acoustic guitar?
Cobain’s Martin D-18E at $6.01 million is the top acoustic on this list, ahead of Clapton’s 1939 Martin 000-42 at $4.101 million.
Who buys these guitars?
Buyers include collectors, museums and music-equipment companies, and most buyers stay anonymous. The Black Strat went to an online bidder who has not been named by the auction house.
What does a vintage guitar from a famous player cost?
It depends heavily on provenance. Pieces with a documented role on a famous recording tend to reach seven figures, while ordinary vintage instruments of the same model sell for a small fraction of that price. For example, Johnny Cash’s 1956 Martin D-21 brought $215,900 and Janis Joplin’s Gibson J-45 $381,000 in the 2026 Irsay sale.
How much did the Black Strat go up in value?
Jim Irsay bought it at Christie’s in 2019 for $3.975 million, so its price more than tripled in seven years.
