How To Introduce Fantasy Into Your Reading Life

0 points

A lot of us are fairly pedestrian with all our reading tastes — if there is something we like then we tend to adhere to it, come hell or high water. However, it’s a good idea to expand your tastes and broaden your horizons every once in a while — perhaps you’re sick of reading about romance, or all of the crime novels you read are getting slightly dark for you, or you also want to encourage your children to read more broadly. Whatever the reason behind it, here’s the way to branch out into fantasy…

Check Out Book Blogs Online

One of the best methods of getting inspiration about what to read is by searching online at what other people are reading. Novel blogging and vlogging is becoming increasingly popular these days — we’re utilized to hearing about cosmetics hauls on YouTube, but publication hauls are also a matter. Book bloggers will provide you great tips and tips about what to read and what is coming out.

You may not have guessed it earlier, however there are a lot of famous novelists who love fantasy as much as they love literary fiction. Getting to play in an extended dream world means they can write about subjects and topics that they could only have dreamed of in more traditional literary fiction.

Go For Urban Fantasy, Not High Fantasy

Do not forget you don’t immediately need to really go for faux-medieval fantasy fiction if you would like to expand your horizons. Going from kitchen sink novels or Jane Austen to paintings and castles is a big jump for anyone. Before that, why not try out some urban dream rather? The Urban dream is set in our world, in modern day London or New York City or perhaps in small town America, but with a twist — there’s something going on beneath the surface. A lot of magical realism books for young adults are books that will creep into your dreams and stay there for a long time.(you can check here my blog for more on best magical realism books for young adults)

Open Your Head A Little

Finally, the only real obstacle to reading fantasy books is within your mind. If you really want to expand your horizons then the truth is that you only have to make the decision to pick up a book which you wouldn’t otherwise have gone for. No one’s saying that you will need to instantly turn into the sort of person who wishes to read about dragons after a life of studying Carol Shields and Elizabeth Strout, but if you want a larger range of fiction to browse and you wish to get into dream then the only real way is to begin learning how to suspend your disbelief. The very best way to do that is to focus on the humanity of those characters you’re reading about and the way they’re reacting to the things which are happening to them, as opposed to any crappy components that aren’t your thing as much. Happy studying!
