1. Wray & Nephew 1940s bottles: about $54,000
Wray & Nephew is a Jamaican distiller. Its oldest surviving bottles, from the 1940s, are valued at around $54,000 each according to a 2023 report. These are collector pieces more than drinks, and no auction house has published a matching hammer price, so we label the number a valuation.
2. 1906 Jamaican rum: about $40,000
This bottle was distilled in 1906 and given to US President Ronald Reagan and his dignitaries during a 1982 visit to Jamaica. It later sold at auction for £31,500, or about $40,000. The date of the sale is not clear in the sources we found, so we cannot place it in the timeline.
3. Legacy by Angostura: we estimate about $25,000
Angostura blended seven of its rarest rums into Legacy and made only 20 bottles. It was billed as the most expensive rum in the world until 2014. A past listing put it at about $25,000 a bottle, and the brand has not published a current price.
4. 1780 Barbados Private Estate: we estimate about $10,000
Older coverage put this very old Barbados rum at roughly $10,667 a bottle. We round it down and call it an estimate, since no seller currently lists it with a price we can confirm.
5. Appleton Estate 50 Year Old Jamaica Independence Reserve: we estimate about $6,600
Appleton laid down the barrels in 1962 and released the rum in 2012 to mark 50 years of Jamaican independence. By then only 13 of the original 26 barrels were left. Earlier coverage listed the bottle at about $6,630. A 51-year-old followed in 2025, and both were reported as the oldest rum on sale at their time of release.
6. Black Tot Royal Navy Imperial: we estimate about $3,000
Black Tot is, reportedly, a blend of the last Royal Navy rum stocks. Earlier coverage listed it at about $3,000, and our estimate keeps it there.
7. Bacardi Ron de Maestros de Ron, Vintage MMXII: we estimate about $2,000
This limited Bacardi release was priced around $2,000 in earlier coverage. Treat that as an estimate, as current stock is hard to find.
8. Havana Club Máximo Extra: over $1,000
Havana Club released only 1,000 bottles of the Máximo Extra Añejo in hand-blown glass, and the brand lists it at over $1,000. Earlier coverage reported about $1,700. Cuban rum is not sold in the US, so check the rules where you live.
9. Rhum Clément 1952: we estimate about $1,200
This vintage rhum agricole from Martinique has been reported at around $1,200. It is a vintage bottle, with a price that depends heavily on condition.
10. Bacardi 8-Year-Old Millennium Edition: we estimate about $700
Bacardi reportedly made 3,000 numbered bottles of this 8-year-old rum to mark the year 2000, in crystal decanters. Earlier coverage put the price near $700, and the numbered edition remains collectible.
Records set in 2025 and 2026
In 2025 Appleton released a 51-year-old rum that, with the earlier 50-year-old, was described as the oldest rum on sale. We found no verified auction record for a rum in 2025 or 2026.
What drives these prices
- Age. Fifty years in a barrel means most of the rum evaporated, so very old rum is rare by physics.
- Tiny runs. Legacy had 20 bottles and the Máximo Extra 1,000, so scarcity is part of the pitch.
- Provenance. A rum given to a US president is worth more than the same spirit without the story.
- A thin market. Few rum auctions publish prices, so valuations vary a lot between sources.
