5. His family was struggling with money
Djokovic may be living his dream now. But his life has not always been a fairy tale.
The 1990s war in Serbia put his life in danger. He and his family had to live in a bunker for months as the war took place. The sound of bombing became his lullaby throughout the war.
He did not come from a rich family. To be the world’s number one tennis player, you have to compete in as many tournaments as possible to collect points. Serbia has no world tournament. Thus, Djokovic had to travel far from his country to compete. That requires a lot of money.
His parents, Srdan and Dijana Djokovic, had to sell things and borrow money from others just to get him on tournaments. This is one of the reasons why he was a late bloomer in tennis career. He simply could not enter as many tournaments as he needed to.
His family never stops believing in him. Their efforts and supports have helped brought him to where he is today.
