4.Matsutake Mushroom
One of the rarest foods and expensive foods in the world is the Matsutake Mushroom.
Neither plant, nor animal, mushrooms are some strange things for sure. And especially the Matsutake Mushroom, which forms a symbiotic relationship with the tree’s roots, never growing in the same spot again.
They grow all over the world, in countries such as China, Canada, Finland, the United States, and Sweden, but it first appeared in the Japanese cuisine.
Their taste is spicy and meaty, the mushrooms costing around $90 for 500 grams if they are imported. But if they are grown in Japan the price can rise to $2000 per kg, making it more than 10 times more expensive for 500 grams.
The mushrooms are considered royalty, and dubbed by the Japanese as:
the king of autumn flavour/the king of the mushrooms.
