    Here are 10 fascinating things about BMW that every car lover should know.

    When we say German luxury in the automobile sector, the only name that pops up in our mind is BMW. Exactly 100 years ago on March 7, Karl Rapp established the company. Rapp, however, got equal allegiance from Franz Popp and wealthy banker, Camillo Castiglioni.  Since then the company has never dissappointed its admirers. BMW has been constantly producing cars that redefine the meaning of luxury every time.

    Unlike most other automobile companies which mainly focus on building luxury cars, BMW is also a manufacturer of engines and motorcyles. It even serves as the parent company to another luxury automobile giant, Rolls Royce. But unknown to most people, BMW didn’t start as an automobile company at first. It was only after World War I that it got itself into producing cars.

    The company’s headquarters are in Munich, Germany. However, the buildings along with an attached museum have an architectural twist. The whole compund is designed in such a manner that it looks like the different parts of a car’s engine.     Yes, BMW is not the full name of the company. It is an acronym that stands for Bayerische Motoren Werke. In English, it means Bavarian Motor Works. The acronym isn’t pronounced as B-M-W in German but as B-M-V. Quite fascinating isn’t it!

    2. The logo has an unusual meaning

    The company’s logo draws inspiration from a rotating propeller of an aircraft. The flag of the German state, Bavaria has two primary colors, Blue and White and so does the logo. But why Bavaria? Well as we said before, the company’s headquarters are in Munich which, in turn, is in Bavaria.

    3. BMW was an aircraft manufacturer in its initial years

    One doesn’t simply symbolize a propeller in the logo of an automobile company without any reason. Karl Rapp was the owner of an aircraft company, Rapp Motorenwerke, before he established BMW. The newly formed company specialized in manufacturing aircraft engines which followed till the World War I. After the events of the war, the company was restricted from producing aircraft engines anymore. In order to sustain itself, the company shifted to manufacture motorcyles and eventually, cars.

    4. The first car was not completely manufactured by the company

    This may sound both funny and astonishing with respect to the current stature of the company. But for an aircraft engine manufacturer, completely designing the first car is quite tough. The Dixi model was based on the famous Austin 7.  Austin even manufactured the chassis of Dixi and licensed it to BMW to put it on sale.

    5. BMW produced the world’s fastest motorcycle

    Ever since the company halted productions of aircraft engines, they started maunfacturing bikes. The WR 500 had even made a mark in history by becoming the fastest motorcycle of the World in 1937. It reached a record-breaking speed of about 170 mph which was very unusual and unachievable at that time.

    The company has produced innumerous models over the years. Inspite of their huge number, a distinctive feature that differentiates them from other cars is the presence of Kidney grills. All BMW cars come with a pair of unique front facing grills that are known by the name of kidney grills. The original kidney grill has faced as much as five significant modifications over the years!

    7. BMW is into Formula One racing

    The BMW M10 was one of the first F1 cars developed by the company that won a championship in the 1980s. However, soon after the event, the company retreated from the F1 sector until the early 21st century. BMW started producing Formula One cars once again in 2006. They named the cars Sauber F1 after taking over the F1 team of the same name.

    BMW is perhaps one of the few companies that have been experimenting with cars, to invent new automobile technology, since their inception. The company produced its first electric car in, as early as, 1972 and introduced it in the Munich olympics. To add to that, it was the first company to produce a turbocharged car which was made available for sale in 1973.
