Rich people own paintings they won at auctions. They spent millions of dollars competing with other buyers to have the legendary masterpiece hanging on their wall. They may not be a fan of art, but the pride of owning a piece of history is priceless.
A billionaire Steven Cohen took home a lot of these exclusive paintings home. In 2006, he spent $137.5 million (now worth $157.5 million) for Woman III, a painting by Willam de Kooning. He also took Le Reve, a painting by Pablo Picasso, for $155 million in 2013.
The most expensive painting ever sold in auction goes to Qatar royal family. It was a painting of two Haitian women titled Nafea Faa Ipoipo? (When Will You Marry?). This Paul Gauguin’s painting was sold for $300 million.
