Top 15 Most Expensive Religious Artifacts in the World

13. Shroud of Turin (Price: $4,730)

Millions of people come to Turin Cathedral, Italy, to see the Shroud of Turin. It is believed to be the Christ’s burial cloth.

How did it get to Turin? In 70 AD, Jerusalem was destroyed by the Roman Empire and the cloth was taken to Edessa. Then in 944, The Byzantine imperial army invaded Edessa and the shroud was taken to Constantinople. As it was invaded in 1204, the Knights of Templars protected the shroud. And in 1307, France took them down.

DeCharney from Lirey, France had the shroud until it was sold to Duke of Savoy in exchange of two castles in 1452. In the end, the Savoy family officially willed it to the Catholic Church in 1982. For safety reason, the shroud has been preserved in Turin since 1578.

However, a carbon-dating test revealed that the cloth was made around the year of 1300. This fact automatically disproved what people believe. Now it only holds a historical value of Christianity. That is why the price went down from two castles to $4,730.
