5. Offerings Everywhere
Offering is an important part of Hinduism. As Hindus, Balinese people give offerings to the gods every time they pray. They call it canang. Its size may vary depending on the occasion. For daily-base prayers, it is usually the size of human’s palm.
The offering is filled with several things. Mostly, they are colorful flowers, rice, candy, and small portion of foods. They are placed on top of square-shaped coconut leaves.
As Balinese pray, they light some incenses and put one on each of the offering. During the ritual, they put offering literally everywhere. Mostly, they put it on shrines. But often, they put some on the street, house entrance, crossroads, and pillars.
So, don’t be surprised if you see many of those as you go around. In case you accidentally step on it, it is okay as long as you don’t interrupt the ritual process.
