4. One Silent Day
As a part of their Hindu ritual, Balinese celebrate one silent day every year of Balinese calendar. They call it Nyepi. It is the Indonesian word for “Silence”.
It usually comes around March. On this one day, everyone must stay inside in silence. This applies not just for Hindus only, but to everyone in Bali including visitors.
You may not be seen outside your house. Also, you may not either make any noises or produces any lights. It is indeed one day in total silence and darkness. There will be Pecalang guarding and patrolling the streets.
On this one day, there are no broadcasting whatsoever. All Balinese are meant to reflect on their life for one whole day. In case of emergency, you may go out in silence by the approval of these Pecalang.
