Photographer Peter Lik’s Maui home, nicknamed “Aura”, was listed at $19.5 million in 2015 and reportedly sold for $9.5 million in 2016, about half the asking price. The Olson Kundig design on Maui’s northwest coast had been bought by Lik for $9.7 million in 2013.

What was the house?
Aura was designed by Olson Kundig Architects, with Tom Kundig as design principal. Our original tour described three buildings with about 80 feet of hydraulic steel-and-glass doors that open the interior to the outdoors, cedar ceilings, a chef’s kitchen, a master suite with Pacific views and a bathroom with a central cube shower. We reported about 4,000 square feet with three bedrooms and three and a half baths, and the home sits near the surf breaks at Honolua and Mokuleia Bays. We have not re-verified those room counts.
Lik reportedly spent around $3 million on updates, and the sale listing offered some of his photographs. His work “Phantom” had been in the news at the time, though we have not re-checked its price here.
How we read the numbers
The gap between the $28 million ask and the $9.5 million close is the lesson. An unusual house with a famous owner can sit for two years and still sell for roughly the price paid. The closing date comes from a brokerage post that gave the day (26 August) but not the year; its publication date points to 2016. We did not find a later resale, so we make no 2026 claim about the current owner.
