14. Eritrea
Probably you have never heard of Eritrea before. It is a country in East Africa. Its capital, Asmara, is the Indonesian word for “romance”. Is the country falling romantically in love with corruption?
Compared to other countries in Africa, Eritrea has suffered less corruption problem in its history. However, this problem is rising. From business people’s perspective, corruption exists among public officials and politicians in Eritrea.
The CPI score of the Transparency International supports this fact. In 2012, the score was 25. But now, it is 18. That is a big downward.
One of the main reasons why is the war. The military has been smuggling weapons into black market. Somehow, it has given way to greater cynicism on the part of citizens coping with economic privation.
