What is the Mirage House?
We have seen our fair share of unique houses, but this one has a pool on the roof. Most people prefer a pool in the backyard, but the Mirage House uses the pool as the roof over its living space. A guest arriving would not see a pool at all until they go up to the top.
The Mirage House was imagined by Kois Associated Architects as “an invisible oasis”, where its residents can enjoy the stunning views over the Aegean Sea.
How does the rooftop pool work?
The rimless pool covers the single-level living space. By day it reflects the surroundings, and at night it reflects the sky. It also shades and insulates the rooms below, which is useful on a hot Greek island.
Project architect Nikos Patsiaouras said the mirroring effect of the pool and the idea of invisibility brought to mind the visual phenomenon of the mirage, which gave the house its name.
What is the setting and materials?
The house sits on a natural plateau on a rocky coastline on Tinos in the Cyclades, overlooking the Aegean Sea. Dry stone walls built from local materials frame the entrance and surround parts of the interior, and the rear wall is rammed earth with layers of vegetation. The goal was to blend the building into the hillside.
One of the clients’ main concerns was visibility and privacy, according to Patsiaouras. The house has three bedrooms, a separate kitchen and an open-air living room.
Is it worth it?
Our opinion: yes, as an idea. A roof pool that doubles as insulation and camouflage solves two problems at once. Is it amazing or what? We have to admit the architects did a stunning job.
