What is Atlantis, The Palm?

The resort was a joint venture between Kerzner International Holdings and Istithmar World. It reflects the vision of chairman Sol Kerzner, who wanted to move guests into an imaginative, themed world. In April 2012 Istithmar World bought Kerzner’s 50 percent stake for $250 million, and Kerzner has continued to manage the property.

The conceptual design came from Northpoint of South Africa, with WATG as architect of record and Laing O’Rourke as principal contractor. Days before opening, a fire damaged the grand lobby, but the hotel opened on time with a light show and a firework display that reportedly used about 100,000 fireworks.

What is there to do?

  • Aquaventure waterpark: the water-themed park on the resort grounds, plus a long private beach.
  • Lost Chambers aquarium: home to over 65,000 marine animals. One travel site reports it was relaunched as Lost World Aquarium in October 2025, so check which name applies when you book.
  • Dining: a collection of 35 restaurants, including Bread Street Kitchen & Bar, Seafire Steakhouse & Bar and En Fuego.
  • Spa, shops and nightlife: the resort also offers a spa and fitness area, boutiques and evening venues.

What are the underwater suites?

The Poseidon and Neptune Underwater Suites measure 165 square meters each. The entrance floor is at ground level, while the bedroom and bathroom are submerged, with floor-to-ceiling windows facing the Ambassador Lagoon and its marine life. They are among only a handful of underwater hotel rooms in the world.
