Kyoto was the imperial capital of Japan, and in autumn its temples and gardens turn red. Forecasters disagree on the best window, so plan flexibility into your dates.
Food is part of the pitch. Kaiseki is Kyoto’s haute cuisine, a multi-course meal that grew out of the tea ceremony. Kikunoi Honten holds three Michelin stars, and lunch there is reported at roughly ¥15,000 to ¥29,000, with dinner far higher, so confirm the price when you book. Shoppers will find plenty of temptations along Sanjo-dori, a narrow shopping street.
2. Lavaux Vineyard Terraces, Switzerland
The Lavaux terraces cover 830 hectares and run for about 30 kilometres along the northern shore of Lake Geneva. Vines have grown here since the 11th century, planted by monastic orders, and Chasselas is the main grape. UNESCO has listed the region as a World Heritage Site since July 2007.
In autumn you can walk or bike the lakeside path between medieval villages, such as Rivaz, Chexbres, Chardonne and St-Saphorin, and look for the yellow waymarks. The Lavaux Express tourist train runs from April to the end of October in 2026, and the Lavaux Panoramic train has a low season from 1 October to 15 November. Check the timetable, since the operators adjust days around events such as the Lausanne Marathon.
3. The Grand Canyon, USA

The Inca citadel above the Sacred Valley received more than 1.5 million visitors in 2025 and is now tightly managed. Peru’s Ministry of Culture caps daily entry at 4,500 visitors, rising to 5,600 on peak dates in 2026, and your ticket prints an entry time with a short grace period.
The standard adult ticket is about S/152, roughly $40, with mountain routes costing more. Buy from the official Ministry of Culture portal, because resellers add markups. Wetter weather starts around November in the Andes, so go early in the season if you can.
5. Mombasa Carnival, Kenya
Each year Mombasa celebrates its heritage with a street carnival, usually in November. Parades converge on Moi Avenue, floats roll through the old coastal city, and the many communities of the coast take part. Stalls sell crafts and Kenyan dishes.
