Best Luxury Hotels In Istanbul

The Peninsula Istanbul is our top luxury hotel in Istanbul for 2026, ahead of the Four Seasons at Sultanahmet and the Four Seasons at the Bosphorus. This list covers the ten five-star hotels we would book first in the city, from Ottoman palaces to waterfront newcomers. We ranked them by setting, building history, size and how recently they opened or were restored.

Istanbul’s best hotels fall into three types: restored palaces and heritage buildings, Bosphorus waterfront towers, and new-build city hotels. We mixed all three so you can pick by the kind of stay you want.

How we ranked the best luxury hotels in Istanbul

We scored each hotel on four things: the building and its history, the location, the scale of the rooms and spa, and how recently it opened or was restored. A hotel with a Bosphorus frontage or a protected historic building scored higher than a good hotel in a generic tower. Room counts are approximate and worth checking with the hotel.

1. The Peninsula Istanbul: Karaköy waterfront

The Peninsula Istanbul sits on the Karaköy waterfront inside the Galataport district, with a Bosphorus frontage and an outdoor pool overlooking the water. It opened in February 2023 with 177 rooms and suites spread across four buildings, three of them protected early 20th century landmarks. Its Peninsula Suite covers roughly 500 square metres with a private rooftop pool.

As the newest big name here, it is the best placed for the old city: you cross the Galata Bridge on foot to reach Sultanahmet’s main sights.

2. Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet: the prison turned palace

The building was constructed as a prison in 1918 to 1919, next to the city’s courthouse, and became a Four Seasons in 1996. It is one of the most unusual hotels in the world, with around 65 rooms and suites arranged around an open courtyard. It closed in 2020 for a full renovation and reopened on 1 December 2021.

Expect a quiet, intimate base a few steps from Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque.

3. Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at the Bosphorus: a palace on the water

This hotel opened in 2008 in a former 19th-century Ottoman palace known as Atik Pasha, and it has roughly 170 rooms and suites. The palace rooms have high ceilings and views of the Bosphorus or the gardens, while the newer wing is more modern.

The Atik Pasha Suite on the palace’s upper floor is among the largest in the city, at well over 300 square metres by our estimate. The hotel sits next to the Ç?ra?an Palace, which makes the stretch one of the grandest in the city.

4. Ç?ra?an Palace Kempinski: a sultan’s home

Sultan Abdulaziz had the Ç?ra?an Palace built between 1863 and 1867. A fire in 1910 left only the outer walls, and a Japanese corporation bought and restored the ruin in 1987. The adjoining hotel opened in 1990 and the restored palace in 1992.

Today the palace wing holds the suites and two restaurants serve guests. If you want to sleep inside a real imperial residence, this is the hotel.

5. Raffles Istanbul: Zorlu Center spa hotel

Raffles Istanbul opened in 2014 inside the Zorlu Center complex and has roughly 185 rooms and suites. Its large spa includes Turkish hammams and indoor and outdoor pools.

The hotel also has an art collection and a large ballroom linked to the Performing Arts Center next door.

6. Mandarin Oriental Bosphorus: Kuruçe?me waterfront

Mandarin Oriental opened here in August 2021, its second hotel in Turkey after Bodrum. It has around 100 rooms and suites with Bosphorus and skyline views and an Ottoman-influenced look.

The site is on the European waterfront near the Kuruçe?me district, away from the busiest tourist streets.

7. Pera Palace Hotel: the Orient Express hotel

Construction began in 1892 and the Pera Palace opened in 1895 to serve Orient Express travellers. The hotel closed in 2006 for a major restoration and reopened on 1 September 2010 with 115 rooms and 16 suites.

The building is listed heritage, and the Atatürk Room 101 is kept as a public museum room. Come for the history first and the facilities second.

8. Shangri-La Bosphorus: Asian touches on the European shore

The Shangri-La Bosphorus opened in 2013 with roughly 200 rooms and suites, most with Bosphorus views. It is reportedly built into a former tobacco warehouse, with the original facade kept.

Pick it for a hotel with a large spa and a mix of Asian and Turkish restaurants.

9. Park Hyatt Istanbul Macka Palas: art deco and shopping

The Park Hyatt occupies the art deco Macka Palas building in a fashionable shopping area, with designer boutiques at street level. It pairs an edgy modern interior with a spa and a signature restaurant.

This one suits guests who want to be in the middle of the city’s shopping and dining rather than on the water.

10. The Ritz-Carlton Istanbul: a city-view classic

The Ritz-Carlton Istanbul is a business and leisure hotel above the Bosphorus, with several restaurants, a spa and a Club Level floor. It is the most traditional international-brand option here.

It ranks tenth because the hotels above it have stronger settings or newer rooms. We would still book it for a meeting-heavy trip.

Which hotels left this list, and why?

We dropped Witt Istanbul, A’jia, The Sofa Hotel and Hotel Les Ottomans from our 2026 ranking because we could not confirm their current status and details well enough to recommend them. The Peninsula, Raffles, Mandarin Oriental and the second Four Seasons are the new entrants that replace them.
