How do we rank luxury hotels in Los Angeles?
We rank first by the MICHELIN Key tier, an inspected, public rating, and then by the character of the stay. Within a tier, the order reflects our own view of exclusivity, setting and how well the property serves the guest it targets. Rates change with season, so check live prices before you book.
1. Hotel Bel-Air: Three MICHELIN Keys
Hotel Bel-Air sits on a secluded 12-acre canyon property, off Sunset Boulevard, with mission-style bungalows, fireplaces and plunge pools. It has been a celebrity retreat since it opened in 1946, and it is one of only two Los Angeles hotels with Three Keys.
How we valued it: the top Key tier, plus a 12-acre private setting.
2. The Beverly Hills Hotel: Three MICHELIN Keys
Known as the “Pink Palace,” The Beverly Hills Hotel has roughly 200 rooms and suites plus around two dozen private bungalows, including the Frank Sinatra Bungalow 22. Optional butler service and the Polo Lounge keep it at the center of Beverly Hills social life.
How we valued it: the same top Key tier as Bel-Air, placed second because its setting is more public and less secluded.
3. The Peninsula Beverly Hills: Two MICHELIN Keys
The Peninsula opened on August 8, 1991, as the first new luxury hotel in Beverly Hills in about two decades. It has around 250 guest rooms and suites, three restaurants including the Belvedere, and a rooftop garden setting.
How we valued it: a Two-Key hotel that we pick for service-led stays.
4. The Maybourne Beverly Hills: Two MICHELIN Keys
The Maybourne Beverly Hills has a 20,000-square-foot spa with 17 treatment rooms and a rooftop bar called Dante.
How we valued it: Two Keys, with the spa as the standout feature.
5. L’Ermitage Beverly Hills: Two MICHELIN Keys
L’Ermitage is an all-suite hotel with just over 100 mid-century-style accommodations and a rooftop restaurant, Poza. It was on our original list, and it keeps its place thanks to its Two Keys.
How we valued it: Two Keys, with the smallest scale, which suits guests who want to avoid crowds.
6. Chateau Marmont: Two MICHELIN Keys
Chateau Marmont on the Sunset Strip has a stone facade modeled on a French chateau, secret gardens and a no-photography policy. Rooms come with kitchens, dining areas and private terraces.
How we valued it: Two Keys, placed last in the tier because it favors atmosphere over modern amenities.
7. Sunset Tower Hotel: One MICHELIN Key
Sunset Tower is a 15-floor art deco building first built in 1929 on Sunset Boulevard. It is the top One-Key pick for guests who want style and a central West Hollywood address.
How we valued it: leads the One-Key group for its architecture and location.
8. Shutters on the Beach: One MICHELIN Key
Shutters on the Beach is a Cape Cod style hotel on the beach in Santa Monica, with an award-winning spa and a lobby used for live music and cocktails. It was on our original list and remains the leading beachfront choice.
How we valued it: One Key, and the best ocean-side setting among the Key-rated LA hotels we reviewed.
9. The Georgian: One MICHELIN Key
The Georgian is a Santa Monica art deco landmark dating from the early 1930s. It suits guests who want a historic hotel close to the beach without a resort scale.
How we valued it: One Key, placed below Shutters on the Beach for its smaller range of amenities.
10. Terranea Resort: Oceanfront resort days
Terranea is an oceanfront resort on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, about 45 minutes from central Los Angeles, with the restaurant Mar’sel. The MICHELIN guide did not state a Key tier for it in the material we reviewed.
How we valued it: it was on our original list and is the best large resort stay in the region, but it sits outside the city core and has no Key tier we could confirm.
What happened to the hotels on our old list?
The previous version of this list ranked The Langham Huntington (Pasadena), Four Seasons Los Angeles at Beverly Hills, W Hollywood, SLS at Beverly Hills, InterContinental Century City, and the Ritz-Carlton with JW Marriott at L.A. Live. We could not confirm a current top-tier rating for them in 2026, so they no longer appear in the ranked list.
