First of all, let’s be clear. When I say starry night, I’m not referring to the stars from the sky. You can figure it out from the photos.
What are these glowing things that makes us feel so comfortable and peaceful? ‘Bioluminescence‘ is the production and emission of light by living organisms. It occurs mostly in marine vertebrates and invertebrates, fungi or microorganisms. Jellyfishes can be found widely in our locations.
Let’s get started and see which are the best places to enjoy a starry night.
#5 Gippsland Lakes, Australia
Gippsland Lakes are located in east Gippsland, Victoria, Australia and they cover 354 square km. Gippsland Lakes include marshes, lagoons and lakes, the largest being the Lake Wellington, Lake Victoria and Lake King. At night, the Dinoflagellate offer you breathtaking sights of the bioluminescence. We considered to be one of the best places to enjoy a starry night.
#4 Toyama Bay, Japan
Toyama Bay is located in Honshu, Japan. You can find here an enormous amount of squid. And the best part, they glow, too! They’re called Firefly squid or the sparkling enope squid. So, besides bioluminescence Firefly squid, you’ll find there some awesome jellyfishes. They create a spectacular shoreline.
#3 San Diego, California, USA
San Diego it is famous for its Red Tide. But I don’t know why they call it red when it actually glows blue. Maybe that’s the beauty of the whole thing. And if you like surfing, it’s perfect! Imagine being on top of one, blue, glowing wave.
If you aren’t 100% sure that is isn’t one of the best places to enjoy a starry night, you’re about to be convinced ! Watch this incredible video :
#2 Glowworm Cave, New Zeeland
This amazing cave can be found in Waitomo, on the North Island of New Zealand. Why is it called Glowworm? Glowworms are insects and adult larviform females, which can glow in the dark, again, through bioluminescence. The lights inside the cave are Arachnocampa luminosa, a species of glowworm that can be found only in New Zealand. They release long strands of silk, using them as traps for the insects flying by. They can only live in caves, because the wind can easily tangle or damage their traps.
A quite weird thing about these creatures. The hungrier they are, the brighter they shine.
Cave, dark, glowworms, stars. It’s the best starry night you can have.
#1 Vaadhoo Island, Maldives
We’ve reached our #1 from the top list of the best places to enjoy a starry night.
No, there are no glowing Firefly squids, glowing jellyfishes, or glowworms. Just bioluminescence phytoplankton that makes the sea look like a sea full of stars. Remember the times when you wrote names in the sand or those footprints? Now they get more spectacular, because they’re glowing.
