1. CHM Montalivet, France: the world’s first naturist holiday resort
CHM stands for Centre Hélio-Marin, or center of sun and sea. It opened in 1950, and the International Naturist Federation was founded there in 1953. The site covers 175 hectares in the Médoc, north of Bordeaux, beside a 3-kilometre beach.
It has about 1,000 private bungalows and caravans, 960 sites for touring caravans and 260 camping sites, arranged in 20 villages. Facilities include tennis, archery, minigolf and a shopping centre with 25 shops. It is family-oriented, and single guests are accepted only if introduced by a client.
Verdict: the original, with the widest range of facilities.
2. Euronat, France: the largest naturist holiday centre in Europe
Euronat opened in 1975 near CHM Montalivet, in a pine forest about 1 km from the beach. It covers 335 hectares and is licensed for permanent residence. The whole area is naturist.
Most of the site is chalets, with a reserved area for camping.
Why here: the biggest naturist site, a little less historic than CHM.
3. Cap d’Agde Naturist Village, France: a naturist village on the Mediterranean
The village is built on private land on the eastern coast of Cap d’Agde, which replaced a campsite that started in the 1950s when the Oltra family let visitors camp and sunbathe on their land.
It has a long beach, shops, cafés and restaurants. Follow the village’s rules about behavior.
Our take: very large, with a strong tourist feel.
4. Vera Playa, Spain: a naturist village in Andalusia
Vera Playa is the beach settlement of the municipality of Vera in Almería province. Since 1990 it has developed into an important naturist village, with shops, banks and restaurants.
Rating note: the biggest Spanish option.
5. Haulover Beach, Miami-Dade, USA: an official clothing-optional beach
The northern 0.4 mile of Haulover Park’s 1.5-mile shoreline is officially recognized by Miami-Dade County as a nude beach. South Florida Free Beaches designated the section in July 1991, and the county later allowed signs and facilities.
The park was renamed Haulover Park in 1947 and opened to the public in 1948.
Bottom line: the best-known legal clothing-optional beach in the US.
6. Croatia (Istria): where commercial naturist resorts began
Croatia is reputed to have been the first European country to develop commercial naturist resorts. Koversada, near Vrsar, was established in 1961 and was the oldest in Croatia. Naturism accounts for an estimated 15% of Croatia’s tourist industry.
Update for 2026: in 2025 the Koversada Naturist Park was turned into a mainly textile campsite, with a small part remaining naturist. Check which site and section you are booking.
In short: strong history, but the flagship site has changed.
7. World Naked Bike Ride: a protest on wheels
The ride began as a protest against oil dependency and car culture, inspired by a 2001 ride in Zaragoza, Spain. The first World Naked Bike Ride was held in 2004 in 28 cities in ten countries, and by 2010 it ran in 74 cities in 17 countries.
Portland’s ride is the largest, with over 10,000 participants in 2019.
Score logic: the easiest way to take part in a mass event, though rules vary by city.
8. Fantasy Fest, Key West: costumes and body paint
Fantasy Fest is a street party held in the last week of October. It was started in 1979 by Bill Conkle, Tony Falcone, Joe Liszka and Frank Romano to attract tourists in the slow season. It is compared to Mardi Gras.
Nudity is illegal in Key West, so costumes and body paint are the norm. Most of the event is adult oriented, but it also has family-friendly events.
The trade-off: fun, but strictly regulated.
9. Hedonism II, Negril, Jamaica: an adults-only resort
Hedonism II occupies 22 acres at the northern end of Negril beach and has 280 rooms. It opened as Negril Beach Village in 1976 and has been called Hedonism II since 1981. It was sold in 2013 to Marshmallow Ltd.
Booking sites list it as adults only and clothing-optional, but we found no 2026 source confirming its operating status. Its sister property, Hedonism III, closed in 2011.
Summary: well known, but with unverified current status.
10. Palm Springs, California: clothing-optional resorts
Palm Springs has long had clothing-optional resorts, and the Terra Cotta Inn was on our earlier list. We could not verify that it is still operating, so check before booking.
Final note: a good desert option if the resorts you want are open.
What happened to the other places on our earlier list?
The Mirage in Las Vegas is no longer run by MGM Resorts, as Hard Rock International took over its operations and planned to rebrand it. We also dropped Hotel Victor in Miami, Mandalay Bay’s pool club, Temptation Resorts, Mardi Gras and the other entries whose nudity rules or status we could not verify.
