5Penang, Malaysia
Penang is considered the street-food capital of Malaysia, and for good reason. The city features dozens of hawker centres.
Penang was considered the Best Street Food in Asia in 2004, by ‘Time’ magazine, citing that ‘nowhere else can such great tasting food be so cheap‘.
Its cuisine reflects the Indian, Malay, Chinese and Nyonya ethnic mix of Malaysia.
Penang is famous for its noodles, spices, fresh seafood, but mostly for its traditional biscuits such as the tau sar pneah (meaning bean paste biscuit).
Also, you have to try char koay teow (meaning stif-fried rice noodles) and assam laksa (a tart, hot and sour fish soup).
Where to eat: Gurney Drive, Pulau Tikus, New Lane, New World Park, Raja Uda, Penang Road, Chai Leng Park and Chulia Street.
