The Exquisite Watch Crafted From 8,000 Colored Precious Stones

7 March 2015

Carpe Koi Watch Is a Masterpiece that Brings Tribute to Japanese Culture

A new piece of art is brought to us exclusively by the Parisian luxury jewelry and watch house, Van Cleef & Arpels.

Van Cleef & Arpels is one of the oldest jewelry stores, a brand full of traditions that has been designing jewelry masterpieces on Place Vendôme for over a century now, since 1906.

This year, in January the famous luxury brand surpassed all the other brands at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) when they presented the brand’s latest masterpiece: the Carpe Koi bracelet watch.

The mesmerizing watch is by far one of the most exquisite pieces ever created by the Parisian brand and it’s a piece that tells a story through precious stones and luxury, featuring all of Van Cleef & Arpels’s strengths.

The jewelry house summoned its best jewelers to hand-craft the bracelet watch featuring an unbelievable number of 8,000 colored precious stones, including yellow sapphires, spessartite garnets, black spinels and “Paraiba-like” tourmalines, all scattered across details of yellow and white gold.

But then again, the most important and exquisite part of the jewelry piece is the Koi fish’s mouth which by pressing on the carp’s tail it opens to reveal a quartz-powered watch face. The astounding watch dial is gently created with princess-cut diamonds, yellow sapphires, spessartite garnets and yellow gold.

As I was saying before, the entire piece was hand-crafted; a huge amount of work that took the team no less than 3,450 hours to create!

But what’s even more impressive about it, beside the flawless craftsmanship is that the piece becomes one with the story it’s telling.

The Carpe Koi bracelet watch is a tribute brought by Van Cleef & Arpels to the Japanese culture as the Koi fish is an ornamental fish with a high popularity in Japan because it is perceived as:

a symbol of love, as it enlivens Zen gardens with its bright colors, contributing serenity and life

Also, as this particular fish is renowned for swimming against the current, the Parisian brand sees in it:

a symbol of strength and courage

I say it’s more than clear Van Cleef & Arpels gave us the secret of success with their latest artwork: choose a story with traditional values and then turn it into glittering gemstones and gold. This is something all of the others jewelry and watch designers should note down and remember in their future creations.
