Cities With Amazing Skyscrapers

Hong Kong has more skyscrapers than any other city in the world: 569 buildings of 150 meters or taller, ahead of Shenzhen with 472 and New York with 324. This list ranks the ten cities with the most tall buildings using the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) skyscraper database, counting buildings of 150 m and above.

Rank City 150 m+ buildings 200 m+ buildings
1 Hong Kong 569 102
2 Shenzhen 472 200
3 New York City 324 102
4 Dubai 289 134
5 Guangzhou 212 69
6 Wuhan 209 76
7 Shanghai 206 76
8 Kuala Lumpur 201 74
9 Tokyo 180 41
10 Chongqing 156 64

There is no single definition of a skyscraper. Our 2010s version of this list counted every building over 100 meters. The builders have moved on, so we now count from 150 meters, the line CTBUH uses in its city table, and we show 200 m counts next to it. Under this rule the order changes: Seoul and Bangkok drop out of the top ten, and Chicago, with 137, sits just behind Chongqing in eleventh.

10. Chongqing: 156 towers

Chongqing stacks its towers on the hills above two rivers. The International Land-Sea Center reaches 458.2 m, and the Chongqing World Financial Center stands at 338.9 m (completed in 2015). Of those, 64 clear 200 m.

9. Tokyo: 180 towers

Tokyo builds fewer ultra-tall towers than Chinese cities because of earthquakes and land rules, but it keeps adding. Azabudai Hills Mori JP Tower, 325 m and completed in 2023, is Japan’s tallest. Of its towers, 41 clear 200 m.

8. Kuala Lumpur: 201 towers

The Petronas Twin Towers (451.9 m) were the tallest buildings in the world from 1998 to 2004. The city has since added Merdeka 118, which at 678.9 m is the second tallest building in the world; its hotel on levels 75 to 112 began operating in August 2025. 74 more clear 200 m.

7. Shanghai: 206 towers

Shanghai Tower is a 128-story, 632 m tower in Lujiazui, the tallest building in China. Shanghai completed five buildings of 200 m or more in 2024. In total 76 clear 200 m.

6. Wuhan: 209 towers

Wuhan is the quiet giant of this list. Wuhan Greenland Center is about 476 m, redesigned from a planned 636 m because of airspace rules, and Wuhan completed 13 buildings of 200 m or more in 2024, second only to Shenzhen that year.

5. Guangzhou: 212 towers

Guangzhou CTF Finance Centre was completed in October 2016. At 530 m with 111 floors above ground, it is the tallest completed building in the city. The Guangzhou International Finance Center, at 439 m, forms the other half of the Twin Towers. 69 clear 200 m.

4. Dubai: 289 towers

The Burj Khalifa has been the world record holder since 2010, with a roof height of 828 m and a total height of 829.8 m. Dubai has the highest 200 m+ count of any city on this list after Shenzhen, with 134 at 200 m+. Ciel Tower, at 373.5 m, was among the tallest completed in 2024.

3. New York City: 324 towers

New York is still the most famous skyline. One World Trade Center, America’s tallest, passed the previous record holder on 30 April 2012 and was topped out in August 2012. Its 200 m+ count of 102 matches Hong Kong.

2. Shenzhen: 472 towers

Shenzhen is the fastest city on the list. Ping An Finance Center, 599.1 m and completed in 2017, is its tallest tower. Shenzhen completed 22 buildings of 200 m or more in 2024 alone, and its 200 m+ count of 200 is the highest of any city.

1. Hong Kong: 569 towers

Hong Kong has more tall buildings than anywhere else because it has little flat land and a very dense population. The International Commerce Centre, 484 m and 108 floors, is its tallest, and the only building in the city with more than 100 storeys. Add 102 towers above 200 m, and the harbour skyline has no rival.
