5. Trappist 12 ($1.35 per ml)
Get this, the 6th most expensive beer in the world is produced in a tiny brewery run by monks. How cool is that?
At first, the monks were brewing the beer only for themselves and the Abbey of Saint Sixtus of Westvleteren since the 1800s. Now, it is sold for $40 per 1-oz bottle. This makes it worth $1.35 per ml.
So, how did it become so exclusive?
It all started back in 2002 when RateBeer named Westvleteren’s Trappist 12 as the best beer in the world. On the following day, media flocked the abbey to find out more about this top-class beer.
Because the Westvleteren is just a tiny brewery, they can only produce around 4,000 barrels a year. So, if you happen to be in Belgium, don’t miss out on a chance to visit the abbey and bring home a bottle of Trappist 12.
