11. Mercedes-Benz SSK Count Trossi ($7.4 million)
For about four years in the 1930s, Mercedes-Benz SSK became one of the leading sports cars in the world. One of the reasons why is its supercharged 7.1-L SOHC engine. That is probably the most bad-ass engine during the pre-war era.
SSK itself stands for Super Sport Kurz which refers to the car’s wheelbase. And this was the last car designed by Ferdinand Porsche before he went solo with his own company.
There were less than forty units of Mercedes-Benz SSK built during those four years. And about half of them were used in car racing events which led to car-parts-cannibalism from those crashed during the race.
Today, only five original models of Mercedes-Benz SSK exist. And one of them was bought by Ralph Lauren. Then he restored it, making it the only surviving Count-Trossi-bodied version of this car in the world. Another copy hit the Bonhams auction house in UK in 2004 and sold at around $7.4 million.
