Top 15 Most Expensive Foods in the World

5. Yubari King Melon – $15,000

Here is another fruit that made it to our top five of most expensive foods list. This one is a melon. Like the Densuke Black Watermelon, Yubari King melon is also cultivated in Japan. Its origin is the city of Yubari, Hokkaido.

Back in 2008, two Yubari King melons were auctioned off for ¥2.5 million (around $24,000). Then earlier this year, a supermarket in Amagasaki bought another two for ¥3 million (around $30,000). It gives each of them a $15,000 worth.

So, the important question is: what makes it so expensive?

Yubari King melon is a hybrid of two other cantaloupe cultivars, Earl’s Favorite and Burpee’s “Spicy” Cantaloupe. This hybrid is perfectly round and has an exceptionally smooth rind. Since its first breakthrough, it has become one of the most popular choices for gifts in Japan.
