7. Ruby and Diamond Ring ($4.2 million)
You have seen the Ruby and Diamond necklace sold at $3.8 million previously on this list. And this time, it’s another piece of jewelry which complements Elizabeth Taylor’s Ruby and Diamond look, the ring.
Richard Burton gave her this ring in 1968. If you think it was for a special romantic occasion like wedding anniversary or Valentine, you are completely wrong. This was simply a Christmas gift.
You would think that both the necklace and the ring were designed by the same jeweler. While the necklace was designed by Cartier, this ring was Van Cleef & Arpels’ creation. Actually, Cartier also designed a pair of ruby and diamond ear pendants for Liz. And they were also sold at the auction but they didn’t make it to our top fifteen list.
This ruby and diamond ring is set with an oval-cut ruby in the center. The gem weighs around 8.24 carats. And it is surrounded by circular-cut diamonds mounted in 18-K gold. A private party from United States bought this ring for $4,226,500. It broke the world auction record for a ruby per carat and for a Van Cleef & Arpels jewel.
