7Waterworld – $175 million
Directed by Kevin Reynolds and co-written by Peter Rader and Twohy, ‘Waterworld’ is an American post-apocalyptic film, based on Peter Rader’s original 1986 screenplay.
Released in 1995, ‘Waterworld’ is one of those films that would be the most expensive one ever made at the date of its release.
It was originally budgeted at $100 million and in the end it had a budget of $175 million.
And $22 million from the additional cost went to a quarter-mile long set, which was half-destroyed by a hurricane.
It is said that after the budget spiraled out of control, Kevin Costner ended up firing director Reynolds.
We still don’t know if director Kevin Reynolds was fired or if he walked off the set, but we do know that Kevin Costner was the one who actually finished directing the film.
Story like: ‘In a future where the polar ice caps have melted and most of Earth is underwater, a mutated mariner fights starvation and outlaw “smokers,” and reluctantly helps a woman and a young girl try to find dry land.’
