6. Lincoln’s Tomb (Estimated Cost: $70 million)
Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States. His death in 1865 was a tragedy. He was shot to death while attending a play in a theater.
The current Lincoln’s Tomb was first constructed in 1915. It is located in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois. His tomb lies in the center of 12.5 acres plot. Its rectangular base is surmounted by a 36-meter-high obelisk and a semicircular entrance way.
In front of the entrance, there is a sculpture of Lincoln’s head. The sculpture’s nose appears a lot shinier than the rest of the face because people who visit the tomb will rub their hands on it as they pass. It is believed to bring them good luck.
This Illinois State Historical Site took $2.975 million to build back in the day. That is approximately $70 million today.
