7. Humayun’s Tomb (Estimated Cost: $50 million)
Humayun was the Emperor of Mughal, Delhi, India. He died in 1556. Only a few years later, in 1569, his son initiated the construction of the tomb. A Persian architect, Mirak Mirza Ghivas, was chosen to design it.
The whole building cost around $1.5 million to build back then. That is approximately $450 million today. The Humayun’s Tomb itself is estimated to take up to $50 million from that total cost.
The 3-acre tomb was built of rubble masonry and red sandstone. It was the first to use these kinds of materials in such large scale. Overall, it is a square building with domes on top. The main dome is 47 meters high from the ground.
The main tomb lies within a chamber with high ceiling encompassed by four main octagonal chambers. Besides Humayun, the building also housed the remains of other subsequent Mughals.
