What makes the house special?
The site slopes, so the architects sank the lowest level below street level. A stone and metal bridge from the road reaches the middle storey, which opens onto a double-height, daylit space looking down to the lower garden. Large sliding glass doors blur the line between inside and outside, and stone paving runs into the garden that curves around the house. The upper floor, with timber-clad balconies, overhangs the slope.
Who is Stanton Williams?
Alan Stanton and Paul Williams founded the London practice in 1985. Its public work includes the King’s Cross Pavilion in London. In this house they replaced the old building, and the result does not read as a rebuild at all.
