2. Transforming the culture of dying
Among many organizations, causes, and projects that George Soros funded is The Project on Death in America (PDIA). This project aimed to improve the care of the dying. The funding for this project went to campaigning and helping families through the process of dying, both for the departing and the relatives left behind.
The goal was ambitious: transforming the culture of dying in the US. After about a decade of work, PDIA distributed $45 million in grant awards to organizations and individuals working to improve care for dying patients and their family.
George Soros said that this project was close to his heart. As he lived through Nazi persecution in Hungary, he witnessed death. And when his father died at home, he regretted the fact that he wasn’t at his bedside.
So, when her mother was close to the end of her life, he maintained good contact right to the end. His family was there as she prepared to die. And he even offered to help her commit suicide if she wanted to. But don’t get him wrong, he wasn’t keen to do it and he is glad she chose not to.
