1. Man Ray: $12.4 million
Man Ray, the American artist who worked in Paris, holds the record for the most expensive photograph ever sold at auction. His 1924 image of a nude with violin f-holes painted on her back sold at Christie’s New York. His Noire et Blanche (1926) has also sold repeatedly, at $4.02 million in November 2022 and $2.88 million at Sotheby’s London in June 2025.

2. Edward Steichen: $11.8 million
Steichen’s atmospheric print of New York’s Flatiron Building was the second photograph to pass $10 million. An earlier Steichen, The Pond-Moonlight (1904), sold for $2.93 million in February 2006.

3. Andreas Gursky: $4.34 million
The German photographer’s large, digitally refined scenes regularly sell for seven figures. Rhein II was the most expensive photograph in the world for years, and his Chicago Board of Trade III reached $3.3 million at Sotheby’s London in June 2013.

4. Richard Prince: $3.97 million
Prince became famous for rephotographing existing images. Spiritual America sold at Christie’s for $3.97 million, and his Untitled (Cowboy) works regularly make $2.6 to 3.7 million; one sold at Christie’s London for $2.60 million in October 2024.

Lange’s Depression-era portrait Migrant Mother is the most reproduced image in American documentary photography. An oversized 1940s print sold at Sotheby’s New York for $609,000, about double its estimate.

Australian nature photographer Peter Lik said he sold a print titled Phantom for $6.5 million to a private buyer in December 2014. The sale was not public, so it is not independently verified, and we do not rank it. If true, it would sit third on this list.
