12. Andreas Gursky
The most ever paid for a photograph was Andreas Gurksy’s 1999 Rhein II, which was sold for $4.3 million in 2011.
Gursky’s works regularly sell for upwards of $1 million, and often feature dizzying detail as well as straight lines and geometric patterns. He is frank about his use of digital enhancement, and many have called his work “vast” and “distorting”. Gursky often chooses to take a high vantage point, photographing from above and so capturing more.
Gursky has exhibited all over the world, and his work hangs in some of the world’s most prestigious galleries.
