8. Cindy Sherman
Cindy Sherman has had a long and successful career as an abstract photographer and artist, often featuring in her own work.
Sherman’s photographs typically appear in a series, telling a narrative and involving the artist herself in different costumes and guises. Her 1977 Untitled Film Stills began to attract attention in the art world internationally, and she continued to create work throughout the 80s, 90s and right up to now. Her work often draws attention to the objectification of women, feminism and voyeurism.
Cindy Sherman’s work sells very well at auction – Untitled #96 sold in 2011 for $3.8 million, the third highest figure every paid for a photograph.
