It is the case of Louis Braille, the man who invented the Braille reading system for the blind.
The invention came to him after a long period of thinking how could he make the bulky books with large letters raised above the paper, more efficient.
He heard that the military had a coding system for the soldiers to read when dark, where they used dots and dashes that where raised above the paper.
Thinking that this code is also bulky and occupies a lot of space, he came up with the idea to use only 6 dots in different combination to express a different and more efficient coding, and the Braille was born.
