We all best know Leighton for her role as Blair Waldorf on the CW hit Gossip Girl. But it looks like the only thing she and the evil, selfish Blair have in common is their exquisite sense of style.Leighton is very open to fashion and she’s clearly following her adventurous instincts, so she always looks like she was dressed for a magazine shoot. Rather than dress like a typical ‘celebrity’ in a floor-length red carpet gown, she dared to try different thing and soon her fashion-forward style started to turn heads in the industry and she instantly became an “It’ girl”.
When asked about her style icons she gives a surprising answer. She considers her mom her principal style icon for offering her closet full of cool ’70s and ’80s clothes. She says that she always gets complimented when wearing one of her pieces. Also, she agrees that playing Blair has gotten her into Bette Davis, Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn. Nowadays, she loves Cate Blanchett. She appreciates her for being experimental, but always managing to look comfortable.
Things weren’t always so easy for her. Look what she says about her high-school fashion: “It was bad. I was picked on because I was a four-eyes and a dork. We didn’t have a ton of money, so I couldn’t say, “Mom, I need to have these crazy expensive jeans.” I’ve always been able to pull a style together, but school was the last place I wanted to do that for. I had long, tangled hair and wore hemp necklaces, baggy T-shirts and not-so-cute jeans. I mean, for crying out loud, we were just going to go throw on gym clothes and run around the track! I’ve grown up as far as the fashion world goes, but I still identify with that high school me.”
When we think about Leighton’s style we immediately remember Blair and her obsession for headbands. It looks like Leighton likes them too, but is definitely not as obsessed with them as Blair was. She has o couple of them, but they’re not very Blair-like. What she really loves is hats, though. As she says: “In the summer I’ll wear a nice straw hat that blocks the sun, or I’ll wear a cap or fedora to cover up bad hair days.”
Leighton is a really clothing chameleon having a style that is in a constant state of flux. So, in the end I will leave you with a few words that I think best describe her style as a fashion icon:
