Where the red sole comes from
The first red-soled pairs were made in 1992 or 1993, when Louboutin used an assistant’s red nail polish to add red to a black-soled pair. The sole became a signature, and the red is catalogued as Pantone 18-1663 TPX. That is why women buy the shoe for that flash of red and the glamour that comes with it.
Most of the ten flats below were designed for women. Some are unisex, since the house designs shoes that work on both.
1. Salvador Flat: $595 (2014)
Colour runs through the whole shoe here, not only the sole. Designed mainly for men, though anyone in a size 39 can wear it. Rope detailing at the base gives it a fresh spring look, and with skinny jeans and a white top it is the easiest walk-around pair of the season.
2. Papi Hugo: $495 (2014)
Size 39 and up as well, but we lean toward calling it a ladies’ shoe. The bold geometric design is easy to wear and comfortable, and at $495 it was the second cheapest of the ten.
3. Galia: $445 (2014)
The cheapest on the list and the navy option for anyone chasing the season’s navy look. The design resembles the Papi Hugo, but the print differs enough to build a whole new outfit around, starting with a simple white summer dress.
4. Dictateur Flat: $1,395 (2014)
The most expensive pair, and the loudest. It stands out, so keep the rest of the outfit print-free. Wear it when you want the shoes to do all the talking.
5. Spooky: $945 (2014)
Despite the name, this is not a scary shoe. It is colour-blocked with an edgy touch: spikes that make the flat pop and change the whole look.
6. Jazzy Doll Veau Velours: $535 (2014)
Bright yellow, feminine and romantic. It goes with skirts, shorts, dresses and jeans, which is as versatile as flats get.
7. Neronna Flat: $845 (2014)
The colourful side of the gladiator sandal, in a turquoise close to a summer sky. Our pick for a beach party.
8. Cloudy Beach: $695 (2014)
Not meant for actual sand. The front detail makes it right for a seaside restaurant or relaxed party, with a long colourful dress.
9. Athena Flat: $595 (2014)
Turquoise again, this time with gold details. Luxurious and minimal at once, so the outfit reads casual and classy.
10. Catchetta: $995 (2014)
The black gladiator flat was our favourite of the collection: fresh yet classic, edgy but restrained, and wearable with almost anything.
