Montrose House is a glass-walled modern villa in Cape Town, South Africa, designed by SAOTA (Stefan Antoni Olmesdahl Truen Architects) and completed in 2010. It sits on a steep ridge in Bishopscourt, the suburb next to Constantia, with views over the Constantia Valley and False Bay. This page is part of our Luxury Homes Edition.
The site
The house replaced an older home on a narrow, triangular ridge. The owners asked for two things above all: orientation toward the Constantia Valley and distant False Bay, and as much garden and lawn as the plot would allow. To give them the lawn, the architects moved the driveway to the southern boundary. The mountains above Kirstenbosch, the botanical garden, also had to be visible from inside.
The architecture
The signature move is a double-winged roof that appears to float above the bedroom wing. Below it, the living rooms are enclosed largely in glass, so the garden, pool terrace and valley run straight into the interior. Clerestory windows under the roof bring in extra light. Inside, the finishes are polished granite floors, with no carpets and no curtains.
The balance between inside and outside is typical of SAOTA, a Cape Town practice with projects on six continents. The firm was founded by Stefan Antoni, Philip Olmesdahl, Greg Truen and Phillippe Fouché. Its recent work includes projects in New York, Dakar and Abidjan, and you can see more at the official SAOTA website.
