Can you believe that an entire city was found underwater? Located underwater off the coast of southern Laconia, in Peloponnese, Greece, the city of Pavlopetri is about 5.000 years old.
Discovered in 1968 by Nicholas Flemming and mapped a year later by a team of archaeologists from Cambridge, the city was originally dated to be Mycenaean period, meaning 1600-1100 B.C. Later studies showed the city dated no later than 2800 B.C.
This amazing relic is a part of the underwater cultural heritage, defined in the ‘UNESCO Convention of the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage’.
