3Heracleion
Heracleion was an ancient city, near Alexandria, Egypt. The city’s ruins are located in Abu Qir Bay, 2.5 km off the coast.
Also known as Thonis, this Egyptian city was the country’s main port during the 12 century B.C.
Some believe that Paris and Helen of Troy were stranded there before the Trojan war began. And also, that Heracles himself had visited the city.
The city sank to the bottom of the sea but in 2000, it was rediscovered by Franck Goddio, after being buried for 1.200 years.
