1Merry Cemetery, Sapanta, Romania
The Merry Cemetery is a beautiful cemetery, located in the village of Sapanta, Maramures County, Romania.
Best known for its colourful tombstones with paintings that describe in a original way the persons that are buried there, the cemetery became on open-air museum, as well as a national tourist attraction.
These colored gravestones commemorate the deceased either with a funny saying, or by depicting a scene from his life.
Stan Ioan Patras was the local artist who sculpted the first tombstone crosses and in 1935, he carved the first epitaph.
We’ll give you an example of funny epitaphs :
‘Under this heavy cross
Lies my poor mother in-law
Three more days she would have lived
I would lie, and she would read (this cross).
You, who here are passing by
Not to wake her up please try
Cause’ if she comes back home
She’ll criticise me more.
But I will surely behave
So she’ll not return from grave.
Stay here, my dear mother in-law!’
