3The South Park Street Cemetery, Kolkata, India
Don’t you just love the way this cemetery looks? You can say it looks like the Angkor Wat temple, located in Siem Reap, Cambodia. We talked about it in our article about Stunning Temples to Visit in Southeast Asia.
South Park Street Cemetery is located on Mother Teresa Sarani, Kolkata, India, being established in 1767 and one of the earliest non-church cemeteries in the world.
Until 1830, the cemetery was in use, and today it is a heritage site, protected by ASI (Archaeological Survey of India).
With approximately 1.600 graves and/or tombs, the cemetery was designed in a mixture of Gothic with Indo-Saracenic style. So were its tombs.
South Park Street Cemetery also features black basalt carvings, representing a respect for the Hindu faith.
