As one of the most famous racing cars of all time, the lovely blue and orange GT40 won its debut race at Spa in 1967 when it was driven by Jacky Ickhx and Dick Thompson.
However, the true fame of the car came from its Hollywood associations. Steve McQueen used the 1968 GT40 Gulf/Mirage as the camera car in the 1971 film Le Mans after his production company leased it from the owner.
One of only two surviving lightweight GT40s from the original production run of three cars, it also happens to have “carbon fiber pioneer” on its impressive list of bona fides.
It is true; it didn’t take very long for a Ford Racing car to become the most valuable American car in history.
