2. Bugatti Royale Kellner Coupe ($9.8 million)
Had we considered inflation on our list, this Bugatti Royale Kellner Coupe would have definitely exceeded all and stood on top. Back in 1987, this car broke the world record for the most expensive car sold in auction.
Christie’s auction house in London, United Kingdom was where the history took place. Built in 1931, the car with 41141 chassis number was sold at $9.8 million to Hans Thulin, a Swedish property tycoon. And that is worth more than $20 million today.
Also known as the Kellner car, it was also kept hidden at Bugatti family home during the World War II, along with other two Bugatti Type 41 Royale cars. Then, this was also sold to the Le Mans race car driver, Briggs Cunningham. When he closed his museum in 1987, the car went to Christie’s.
To honor his late brother, Rembrandt, Jean put a sculpture of rearing elephant designed by the artistic brother as the radiator cap for all Royale cars.
