Most Expensive Chocolate in the World

The most expensive chocolate dessert ever put on a menu is Serendipity 3’s Frrrozen Haute Chocolate in New York, listed at $25,000, while the Guinness record for chocolate by weight belongs to Attimo’s La Chuorsa bar at 6,268.50 pounds a kilo. We ranked six chocolates by the price printed on the item itself, using Guinness entries, dated news of single launches and brands’ own online shops. Some entries are one-off stunts, so we flag which can still be bought. Prices in dollars are our conversions and are approximate.

1. Frrrozen Haute Chocolate, Serendipity 3: $25,000

A frozen chocolate dessert made from a blend of 28 cocoas, 14 of them among the most expensive in the world, topped with 5 grams of edible gold. It joined the menu at Serendipity 3 in New York on 7 November 2007, in partnership with a jeweller, and replaced the restaurant’s $1,000 Golden Opulence Sundae as the record holder.

Today the restaurant’s menu shows Frrrozen Hot Chocolate drinks at ordinary prices, not the $25,000 version. Treat this entry as a record price, not a dessert you can order.

How we valued it: menu price recorded by Guinness for the most expensive dessert; the item is no longer on the regular menu we checked.

2. Daniel Gomes gold bonbon: 7,728 euros

Portuguese chocolatier Daniel Gomes showed this diamond-shaped bonbon at a chocolate fair in Obidos in March 2018. The shell is covered in edible gold and filled with saffron, white truffle, Madagascar vanilla and gold flakes. It was one of a limited run of 1,000 and came in a crown-shaped box set with 5,500 Swarovski crystals.

Reports at the time put the price at 7,728 euros, or $9,489. Gomes said it was certified as the most expensive chocolate, but we did not find a record listing from Guinness to match.

How we valued it: launch price reported in March 2018 news coverage; the Guinness claim is the maker’s.

3. La Chuorsa by Attimo: CHF 640 for 80 grams

On 31 October 2019, Attimo Chocolate Zurich set the Guinness record for the most expensive chocolate with this 80-gram bar. The bar uses Swiss saffron from the village of Mund, crystallised orange crisps and 68 percent Chuao chocolate from Venezuela. The maker, Alain Mettler, could produce only 10 kilograms in total.

CHF 640 for 80 grams works out at 6,268.50 pounds a kilo, which is how Guinness measures the record. Per bar it is cheaper than the two above, but by weight it is the priciest chocolate we found.

How we valued it: retail price recorded by Guinness in October 2019; we found no newer record, so the title may have changed hands.

4. To’ak Masters Series El Jaguar: about $490 to $500

To’ak is an Ecuadorian maker that sells aged and single-harvest bars. The Masters Series El Jaguar edition is limited to 500 units and shows at about $490 to $500 on To’ak’s own shop, with one page marking it as last stock.

The brand’s other collector bars sit at $210 to $220, and its regular Rain Harvest bars at $40 to $45.

How we valued it: price on the brand’s own shop pages, which differ slightly by listing.

5. La Madeline au Truffe by Knipschildt: $250

Danish-born chocolatier Fritz Knipschildt’s truffle, filled with French black truffle, carries a $250 price in the brand’s online shop. It was named the world’s most expensive chocolate by Guinness in 2017, a title it lost to Attimo in 2019.

The brand’s own blog also speaks of about $1,000 a pound for the truffle, from a 2018 article. We rank by the single-piece price.

How we valued it: price shown in the maker’s own online shop.

6. To’ak Vintage 2014 Andean Alder, 81%: $220

A dark chocolate bar made from 2014 cacao and matured four years in Andean alder wood. To’ak lists it at $220 on the product page.

This bar is the entry point to the aged-chocolate end of the market, and a bar costs roughly five times a normal premium bar.

How we valued it: price on the brand’s product page.

What we could not verify

The Wispa Gold bar from Cadbury, covered in gold leaf in 2009, was reported at about 1,000 pounds but was never sold according to Guinness, so it is out. A jewellery-and-chocolate gift box called Le Chocolat Box has been quoted at up to $1.5 million, but we found no official page for it and the price is mostly jewellery, so we left it out. Amedei’s Porcelana bar, long cited as a top bar, lists at only about 10 euros on its shop.

What drives chocolate prices

  • Gold and gems. The two top entries get their price from edible gold and a jewelled box, not cocoa.
  • Tiny runs. Attimo made 10 kilograms in all, and El Jaguar is capped at 500 bars.
  • Aging and origin. To’ak ages bars for years and names the harvest, a tactic borrowed from fine wine.
  • Record chasing. A Guinness title is cheap marketing, which is why records change hands.
