What makes a London trip feel costly is rent, restaurants and a handful of paid attractions, while its biggest museums are free. Here are the main costs a visitor meets in London as of October 2026, with real prices.

1. Rent: about £2,157 a month
The heaviest cost in the city is housing. A one-bedroom flat in the centre rents for about £2,157 a month, with a typical range of £1,500 to £3,000. Monthly living costs excluding rent come to about £1,080 for a single person and £3,803 for a family of four. For a visitor this matters because it flows into everything else, from hotel rates to restaurant prices.
Even so, New York is still dearer. The same flat there costs about £3,283 a month, and overall costs excluding rent run about 15% higher than in London.
2. Afternoon tea on the London Eye: £75
The London Eye is the most visited paid attraction on this list. Standard tickets start at £29 online and £39 at the door, and prices rise on busy days. Bundles cut the per-attraction cost: a ticket combining the Eye with Madame Tussauds and a SEA LIFE aquarium starts at £54, against £117 if you buy the three separately. The Afternoon Tea Experience costs £75 a person. A private pod for two costs £750.
3. Westminster Abbey: £32
An adult ticket to Westminster Abbey costs £32, a child (6 to 17) £14, and children under six go in free. The abbey advises booking ahead and it closes on some days, so check the calendar.
4. Eating and drinking
A meal at an inexpensive restaurant costs about £20, with a range of £14 to £30. A half litre of draught beer costs about £7 and a cappuccino about £4.25. Food is one place where you can cut costs, because the lower end of the range is real.
5. Getting around: £3 a trip
A one-way local ticket costs about £3, and a monthly pass about £186. Tube and Elizabeth line trips to or from Heathrow that pass through Zone 1 are charged at peak fares, so the airport run costs more than a short hop.
What London does not charge for
The British Museum, the National Gallery and the Science Museum have no admission charge for their main displays. As with other UK national museums, only special exhibitions charge, and the National Gallery has charged more than £20 for a major show. Tate Modern is free for its collection displays. A day with three of these museums costs nothing at the door, which offsets the Eye and the Abbey.
