The coin was made from 90pc gold and it is the first double eagle was minted in 1849, same as the California Gold Rush
Almost 500,000 coins were minted in that year. President Roosevelt was the one to issue an executive order recalling all the gold coins from the general public and have them melt all the $20 gold pieces that were still in his position.
But of course there was someone who didn’t follow the order. Because somehow some of 1933 dated $20 gold pieces escaped from the mint’s vaults even if they were never officially issued.
Now, they are illegal to own, except one that was originally owned by King Farouk of Egypt.
