And the most expensive commercial is… Le Film by Chanel!
This ad still hold the record of the world’s most expensive advertisement on television since it broke the Guinness World Record back in France, November 1st, 2004.
It is about the new Chanel perfume, No. 5. And it was starring Nicole Kidman. Originally made as a four-minute feature film, it got reduced into two minutes eventually. It was directed by Baz Luhrmann, who also directed Romeo + Juliet, Australia, and The Great Gatsby.
In this ad, Nicole Kidman portrayed a famous actress chased by paparazzi. As she tried to escape, she accidentally met a regular guy whom she fell in love with. But in the end, she had to leave. Even though they are no longer together, he will always remember her, especially her perfume.
Nicole went home with a $3.7 million paycheck for her performance in this ad. The rest of the $33 million budget went to the award-winning director, other actors and extras, Karl Lagerfeld’s couture outfits, and the filming process itself.
