Most Expensive Cufflinks in the World

3. King Edward’s VIII Cartier Cufflinks: $400,000

You read about  the cufflinks made for professional players and the ones made from guns, but you have to hear the next story.

These cufflinks belonged to King Edward VIII. It began as a love story between him and his commoner American wife, Wallis Simpson.  Their story is probably one of the greatest of the century.

Facing objections from the British Parliament and the Church of England, King Edward voluntarily abdicated his throne in 1936 in order to marry Simpson. What a nice guy!

Perhaps to thank him for his gesture, Simpson gave the diamond cufflinks to King Edward as a gift.

In 1987 at an auction organized by Sotheby’s, over 50 million dollars’ worth of the couple’s memorabilia were sold.

Among them, King Edward’s most precious possession- a pair of diamond cufflinks which were given to him by his wife.

The famous cufflinks were designed by Cartier, the diamond and sapphire-encrusted cufflinks were part of a dresser set.

Legend has it that the cufflinks were engraved with the phrase ”Hold Tight”, an expression often used by King Edward in his love letters to Simpson.

Told you that they had a lovely story, didn’t I?
